THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR NAMES INTRODUCTION

Our names play a crucial role in defining who we are.

They have strong historical, familial, cultural, and personal ties. Additionally, they help us understand who we are, the groups to which we belong, and where we fit in the world.

This is why pronunciation errors, inappropriate use of our given or preferred names, or mis gendering can harm or have an impact on a person's sense of belonging on campus.

However, it is an indisputable fact that these things will occur. Others who have their names and pronouns incorrectly used frequently find themselves in the awkward position of having to confront, correct, and call people in. Microaggressions can occur when preferred names and pronouns are misused or mispronounced. (ouch!)

Daily insulting behaviors or remarks, such as those directed at racialized and/or other marginalized groups, are known as microaggressions. In order to create a more inclusive and inviting atmosphere, it is our responsibility as members of the UBC community to learn about and practice having those occasionally challenging conversations with as much respect, compassion, and grace as we can.
